Civilizations | Assorted Bowl & Plate from Japan
This bowl and its plate are the work of the Japanese ceramic artist Kan Ito. Kan Ito's creations are marked by a disciplined and understated elegance. Drawing inspiration from ancient civilizations and classical forms, his vessels are known for their lean, functional shapes, achieved through years of experimentation and refinement. Kan Ito employs a variety of traditional techniques and glazes, including white mud, ash glaze, rust silver glaze, white porcelain, and enamel glaze.
Kan Ito’s journey in ceramics is linked to that of his father, the master potter Hiroshi Tachibana and to Hikaru Yamada, a founding member of Sōdeisha, a Kyoto-based group, established in 1948 that sought to reimagine the possibilities of ceramic art, moving beyond tradition to explore new forms and techniques. Since establishing his own kiln in 2006 in Kanagawa, Kan Ito has particularly become known for his distinctive glazes.
This bowl and its assorted plate balance timeless beauty and utility. They are an invitation to pause and reflect upon the fact that each object made by hand has its own story.
