Naga Lalan

US$409.00

This relatively thick but soft double ikat has beautiful washed colors witnessing its age and use over the years - both from daily wear and cultural festivals.

This double ikat was hand-woven in the Sikka region where ikats are predominantly red or black. Each ikat is composed of seven bands that are given specific names. The most important one is called ‘Mother’s elder sister’ while  the second most important one is ‘Mother’s younger sister’ referring to the importance of family ties . The  dominant motif is a dragon footprint called ‘naga lalan’ - typical on the island of Flores in Indonesia which is known for its komodo dragons.

In this region, the production of ikats is a very honorable skill that is critical to find a suitable husband. It can take up to 10 or 20 years to complete one piece. The dyeing process itself can take a very long time to obtain the correct red tone made from the roots of the Morinda tree that can be affected by adverse weather conditions.
