A set of three rice bowls produced on the Japanese island of Kyushu according to ancient techniques dating back to the 15th century when Korean potters brought new techniques such as kiln designs and ash-glazing.

These bowls were hand-made in the village of Onta where a few potters work together as a community creating objects both for daily use and artistic purposes. Onta pottery has been designated an Intangible Cultural Property of Japan meaning that potters continue to work according to traditional methods and perpetuate important old knowledge and savoir-faire.

Rice is the staple food of half of the worldwide population, mostly in Asia and also in some countries in South America and Africa. Each culture has its own way of cooking and serving it. In Japan, it is served in a separate bowl accompanying the dishes. A meal without rice is not complete. These bowls can also be used for any other purpose. And with ravishing designs that complement each other, they make a beautiful decorative piece on a food table.
